What is Pathology?

Types of Pathology

Anatomical Pathology
As the name suggests, anatomical pathology is the study of anatomical features to diagnose & enhance knowledge of disease, in general.
This includes studying tissues extracted from the body or even a whole body in the event of conducting an autopsy,
There are various broad subcategories of anatomical pathology. This include:
- Surgical pathology: Examining tissues extracted during a surgery
- Histopathology: Examining cells that have been stained with dye (for visibility) with a microscope
- Cytopathology: Study of small groups of cells shed in bodily fluids or attained via scraping
Clinical Pathology
The laboratory analysis of bodily fluids and tissues for diagnosing diseases is termed clinical pathology. As a result, the field of clinical pathology is also sometimes mentioned as the field of laboratory medicine.
The main types of clinical pathology include:
- Chemical pathology: Chemical analysis of bodily fluids (mostly blood/urine) via testing & microscopy. Also known as clinical chemistry
- Hematology: Study of the cause, diagnosis, treatment & prevention of diseases associated with blood
- Immunology: Study of immune system disorders. Also known as immunopathology
Molecular Pathology
The third and last subtype of pathology, molecular pathology is the study of abnormalities of cells & tissues at the molecular level.
It’s a broad category that includes the study of disease of any organ/tissue in the human body by inspecting the molecules present in cells and tissues. It can incorporate elements of both anatomical & clinical pathology.
