What is an MRI?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a common radiology scan which utilises magnetism, radio waves & computer to generate images of body structures. An MRI is able to identify even tiny changes in body structures.
The MRI scanner consists of a tube encircled by a huge circular magnet. The patient has to lie down on a moveable bed that goes into the magnet. The scanner generates high-resolution images, providing extensive info on the scanned body part.
In the case of a few MRI procedures, contrast agents like gadolinium are utilised to enhance the accuracy of the generated images.
Risks and side effects associated with MRI
MRI is an entirely painless radiology technique and provides the benefit of avoiding x-ray radiation exposure and no side effects.
However, patients with metallic materials surgically fitted within their body are required to inform the doctor/staff before the MRI. This is because metallic materials, chips, surgical clips, or foreign materials (artificial joints, metallic bone plates, or prosthetic devices, etc.) possess the potential to alter the images received by the MRI scanner substantially.
Patients fitted with heart pacemakers, metal implants, or metal chips/clips in or around the eyeballs cannot be scanned with an MRI due to related risks. Likewise, individuals having artificial heart valves, metallic ear implants, bullet fragments & chemotherapy or insulin pumps need to avoid an MRI.
Moreover, patients with claustrophobia or anxiety disorders need to inform the doctor/staff beforehand. A mild sedative may be provided to help reduce the claustrophobic/anxious feeling during the procedure.
MRI Procedure
While lying down inside the scanner, you are required to stay still and breathe normally to ensure precise results.
The MRI staff remains nearby to the scanner, and communication is usually maintained during the test with the help of a buzzer. The buzzer can be used to alert the staff in case you experience any issues.
As the scan takes place, loud, repetitive clicking noises may be heard. At times, you may be injected with a liquid intravenously to improve the accuracy of the images to be generated.
The duration of an MRI varies as per the body part to be scanned, with the procedure usually taking around 30-90 minutes.
Results of an MRI
On the completion of the MRI scan, the computer renders visual images of the body part that had been scanned. These images can then be transferred to film (hard copy) if required.
A radiologist interprets the images and creates a report providing detailed info regarding the results. The doctor will then examine the results and discuss them with you and/or your family members.

Frequently Asked Question
What type of service is MRI?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging service that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the organs and tissues within the body. At Clinico Scan Centre, we offer advanced MRI services for accurate diagnosis.
What is MRI used for?
MRI is used to diagnose a wide range of conditions by providing detailed images of organs, soft tissues, bones, and other internal structures. It’s particularly useful for examining the brain, spine, joints, and abdomen.
What is the cost of MRI in Mumbai?
The cost of an MRI in Mumbai can vary depending on the type of MRI and the area being scanned. At Clinico Scan Centre, we offer competitive pricing for all MRI services. Please contact us directly for specific pricing information.
Why is MRI costly?
MRI is costly due to the advanced technology involved, the expense of maintaining the MRI machine, and the need for skilled radiologists to interpret the results. The high level of detail and accuracy provided by MRI scans also contributes to the cost.
Which is costly, CT or MRI?
Generally, MRI scans are more expensive than CT scans due to the technology used and the detailed images produced. However, the cost can vary based on the type of scan and the area being examined.
Is MRI safe?
Yes, MRI is considered a safe procedure as it does not use ionizing radiation like X-rays or CT scans. However, certain individuals with metal implants or devices may need to take precautions or avoid MRI.
Does MRI have side effects?
MRI is generally free from side effects. However, some patients may experience claustrophobia or discomfort from lying still during the scan. At Clinico Scan Centre, we take measures to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure.
How long does MRI take?
The duration of an MRI scan can vary depending on the type of scan and the area being examined. Typically, an MRI scan can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.
Can you eat before MRI?
Whether you can eat before an MRI depends on the type of scan you are having. For some MRI scans, fasting may be required, while for others, you can eat normally. Please follow the specific instructions provided by Clinico Scan Centre before your scan.
Can MRI results be seen immediately?
MRI results are usually reviewed by a radiologist, and a detailed report is prepared. While the images are available immediately after the scan, it may take some time to receive the final results. At Clinico Scan Centre, we strive to deliver results as quickly as possible.
Why is MRI so loud?
MRI machines produce loud noises due to the powerful magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses used during the scan. These noises are normal, and patients are usually provided with ear protection to reduce discomfort.
What will MRI results show?
MRI results can show detailed images of your internal organs, tissues, and bones, helping to diagnose a variety of conditions, from tumors to spinal cord injuries. The specific findings will depend on the area of the body being scanned.
How can I see my MRI report?
At Clinico Scan Centre, you will be informed when your MRI report is ready. You can collect it from the center or, in some cases, it may be provided digitally.
How long will the results of MRI take?
The time it takes to receive MRI results can vary, but at Clinico Scan Centre, we aim to provide your results within 24 to 48 hours. Our team will inform you once your report is ready.
