What is OPG X-Ray?
Playing a key role in modern-day dental treatment, the OPG X-Ray test generates an image of human teeth with the help of which dentists check and assess the oral health of an individual.
OPG X-Ray is important as it helps diagnose a dental issue at an initial stage before it develops into a severe condition. Dental Radiographs is another name used for OPG X-Ray.
OPG X-Ray Procedure
You may be first asked to remove any jewellery, eyeglasses & metal objects that you might be wearing.
Once that is done, the dentist or staff will inform you to stand with your face resting on a small shelf and remain still. You will then have to gently bite a sterile mouthpiece to steady your head.
The x-ray machine will send x-rays inside your mouth. Teeth, bones, and tissues inside the mouth will absorb the x-rays due to their dense nature.
Any infected portion of the teeth/bones/gums/cheeks won’t be able to absorb the x-rays due to their comparatively less dense nature. They will be shown as darker portions of the mouth in the x-ray film. With the help of this, the dentist will diagnose the problem by closely inspecting the film.
Types of Dental X-Rays:
Dental X-Rays are of two different types:
This is the most common type of dental x-ray that provides extensive info regarding cavities, tooth root health, and the status of developing teeth. It further consists of 3 types: bite-wing x-rays, periapical x-rays and occlusal x- rays.
- Extraoral X-Rays
This type of dental x-ray provides details about teeth, jaw & skull but is rarely used by dentists as it offers lesser info than intraoral x-rays.
