PET CT Scan Services

Clinico PET CT Scan Services at Thane

PET CT Scan detects certain diseases before other imaging scans by visualising the metabolic processes occurring in the body. PET CT Scan facility is available at our upcoming technologically advanced Thane centre.

What is a PET CT Scan?

PET CT Scan or Positron Emission Tomography Scan is an imaging technique that enables doctors to check out and monitor the interior of a human body and its working.

The main difference between a PET CT Scan and an X-ray, MRI or CT Scan is that a PET CT Scan shows the working of a human body. It offers precious information about blood flow and the body’s utilisation of oxygen & sugar, which helps detect the onset of a disease.

PET CT Scan Procedure

If you are getting a PET CT Scan, then you will first have to wear a hospital gown on reaching the clinic. The doctor will then provide a radioactive substance known as radiotracer/tracer, which you have to either breathe in, swallow or get injected with. This is determined by the type of the tracer.

After that, there is a waiting period of around half an hour wherein your body absorbs the tracer. Once that is over, you are informed to lie down on a table that goes inside the PET CT Scan machine. Patients with claustrophobia/anxiety are usually provided with a drug to ensure calmness during the scan.

The tracer absorbed by the body starts giving off radiation, which is detected by the PET CT Scan machine. The machine then starts making buzzing sounds & clicking images, and you have to remain very still & avoid talking while lying down on the table.

The images clicked showcase the movement of the tracer inside the body. If the tracer builds up in specific areas, it’s a sign of disease. The scan is completely painless and is generally completed in an hour’s time.

PET CT Scan Preparation

Before the PET CT Scan, the doctor will generally inform you to:

  • Avoid heavy physical activity for 24 hours prior to the scan
  • Only drink water & avoid eating for a specific number of hours before the scan
  • Remove all jewellery & metal objects that you may be wearing

Moreover, you will need to inform the doctor about any allergies, health conditions and ongoing medications or supplements that you may be consuming. Women also need to tell the doctor whether they are pregnant or are breastfeeding.

PET CT Scan Risks and Side Effects

Although the PET CT Scan is totally painless, it may cause a couple of side effects in some individuals. This include:

  • Pain or redness in the portion wherein the tracer is injected
  • Mild allergic reactions to the tracer, in rare cases

Once the scan is over, the doctor will usually tell you to drink a lot of fluids to help get rid of the tracer inside your body through urine or stool. Also, you may need to avoid close contact with pregnant women, kids, or babies for some hours due to the presence of the radioactive tracer.

In just a few hours or sometimes days after the scan, the radioactive material inside the tracer decays and ceases to be radioactive.

PET CT Scan Results

The results of a PET CT Scan are typically received within a day of the scan. They are highly precise and show bright areas in places where there’s a lot of activity in your cells. This is generally a sign of disease.

To acquire a comprehensive overview, the doctor may compare the PET CT Scan results with results from other imaging like X-ray/MRI/CT Scan that you may have had.
